There are very minimal training requirements for staff who support individuals with an intellectual disability. Although CLdS is responsible for offering Protection training they are being challenged to offer it consistently, across the province so many organizations have identified concerns about their staff accessing this very important training. Over and above this training, the Agency Guide to the VPA training also offers staff very important information that contributes to the recognition and prevention of abuse. As with the Protection training, this curriculum cannot be consistently accessed by agency staff.
Minimum competency standards and professionalization of the workforce would make a significant difference in the prevention, recognition and proper reporting of abuse.
